Discontinuation Announcement
Mac Mojave or older versions no longer supported on steam starting February 15, 2024. It means that there will be no further updates (including security fixes) for existing Steam clients installed in such OS. Finally, technical support for problems experienced by users on these antiquated operating systems will also cease.
Background and Transition
Support ended for High Sierra in 2020, and Mojave in 2021 from Apple. In order to do this, steam continued releasing of minimal updates and support for its client on these operating systems of 32-bit games. Nevertheless, the organisation has decided to terminate their support over the old systems following exploitation of the updated vulnerabilities. It is recommended that users of earlier versions of these old operating systems should try upgrading or moving to the latest macOS if they can.
Emphasis on Security
Support for the old and vulnerable operating systems has been withdrawn due to security reasons because such obsolete software can be easily accessed by hackers who have found the solution for those vulnerabilities in the later versions. In order to guarantee that security is maintained as well as gameplay is smooth, steam has necessitated that the older Mac OSs be replaced with newer ones.
With advancement in technology, it is imperative for one to have updated software. One needs this in order to avoid risks that may arise and compromise security. This demonstrates how Steam understands that the software environment must be updated and in-sync with Apple’s timeline on discontinuance of services for old Mac OS versions.
“Repairability” discussion among others in the hardware aspect has also been compared on Steam Deck OLED and Legion Go. Please see our separate article for more information on this contrast.
This also enables users to keep abreast with such changes in order to take the right steps during their playing sessions for smooth and safe gaming.
