Meta Overcomes Bureaucratic Obstacles And Readies for Introduction of Threads in the EU.
Overcoming Regulatory Challenges
According to recent Wall Street Journal reports, Meta has cleared through bureaucracy hurdles enabling the release of Threads in EU. Reportedly, Mark Zuckerberg’s firm seeks to provide EU users with access to their text-based social network by year-end.

However, the global debut of Threads took place in July last year without an EU introduction because, at the time, Meta was uncertain that it would be able to comply with the strict DMA provisions of the recently adopted Digital Markets Regulation set to enter in force on 5th May of this

Threads and Compliance with DMA

For instance, a certain point of concern concerned the fact that Threads allegedly might have been breaking the rule prohibition of aggregation of user information from multiple online platforms by using it for personalized targeted advertisements without previous permission of users. Interestingly, Thread initially had the roots in the Instagram world hence it became necessary for people to utilize their present accounts on Instagram which they were previously utilizing as opposed to creating the other accounts different from that.

All data such as followed accounts, biographical information of other users, blocklist, etc., “imports” during activation. Previously the Threads account could be re-enabled. The two characters pretty much wrote themselves out of each other’s lives by deleting one essentially erased the other.

To comply with the DMA regulations, Meta, hence, splits up the apps making it impossible for an uninstalled Threads profile to affect the associated Instagram account. According to the sources, Meta will provide EU users with an opportunity to utilize Threads as a reader’s page, i.e. they will not add any posts.

Enhanced User Control and Interoperability

The latest threads, allow users to decide whether they can make suggestions about thread’s post in Instagram and Facebook, respectively. It is also possible to ensure that Threads posts appear organically on other Meta platforms by going into the Settings>Privacy and disabling the cross-platform tracking.

The EU market entry is expected to enhance Threads’ competitiveness, especially against X, which has faced a challenging period following accusations of antisemitism against its owner, Elon Musk. Multiple companies, including Apple, Disney, IBM, and others, suspended advertising on the platform.

X’s Struggles and Potential Impact

X, already facing challenges, witnessed a CEO-led effort by Linda Yaccarino to mend relationships with commercial partners, but recent setbacks have nullified these efforts. X lost sponsorships from over 100 brands, risking a potential $75 million revenue loss by the end of 2023, as reported by the New York Times.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, mentioned in a recent earnings conference that Threads currently boasts “just under” 100 million monthly users and anticipates reaching up to a billion users in a few years. The EU inclusion could add around 40 million monthly users, providing a substantial boost to the app’s user base.
