Windows 10 still a leader on Steam, but Windows 11 is making a clear recovery

by Brad

Of all the operating systems that feature in the gaming environment of Steam, it is Windows 10 that dominates. Nevertheless, the case for celebrating by Microsoft is strong because Windows 11 appears to be progressing well. By the end of November 2023, Windows 10 dropped by 12% while Windows 11 rose by 11.5%.

Closing the Gap: Windows 11 vs. Windows 10

With less than a 10 per cent margin, Windows 11 is gaining ground and is slowly chasing after the undisputed lead of Windows 10. Before we know what’s happening, Windows can easily catch up with this speed! According to steam’s report, they undertake an optional but anonymous survey monthly to determine the various machines and programs of the system used by their customers. Such information assists in making investment decisions as regards new technology and products.

However, it is worth noting that not every Steam user participates in the survey, and not every gamer has a PC with Steam installed. Hence, although the outcome is enlightening, it is incomplete and offers one-side consideration. Here are the operating system percentages reported by Steam in November 2023:

Windows: 96.56% (-0.87%)
Windows 10 64 bit: 53.53% (-12.05%)
Windows 11 64 bit: 42.02% (+11.51%)
Windows 7 64 bit: 0.69% (-0.38%)
Windows 8.1 64 bit: 0.16% (+0.03%)
Windows 7: 0.06% (+0.06%)
macOS: 1.53% (+0.34%)
Linux: 1.91% (+0.52%).

Additional Insights from Steam Surveys
Cumulative insights spanning Windows and macOS/Linux contributed less than 4%. These cumulative findings from the November 2023 report include:

RAM: Thirteen point eight two percent of respondents indicate sixteen gigabytes; this represents an increase by nineteen tenths eighty-eight percent. The decline was significant among those having 32 GB ( -8.19% from 22.77%).3
Storage Space: Over one TB dominates and although it remains the most common option, it goes down by 13.16%.

GPU: The GeForce RTX 3060 still remains dominant in the graphics card marketplace with a share of 4.89% down from 4.79%. There are about two point three three per cent for the 40 series start off with RTX 4060 Laptop.
Resolution: One-sixth of the players choose Full HD (60.09%, growing by 1.08%) and Quad HD falls to 15.97% with a drop of 7.17 percent.
