GPU market, finally some positive signs after three years of chaos

by Brad

Introduction
There has been a positive momentum after three years of troubles within the GPU market. Three years of chaos doesn’t quite describe them. Since 2020, when the covid-19 pandemic happened, chip shortages and artificial intelligence rush, the demand and supply has not coincided. This notwithstanding, recent statistics from Jon Peddie Research show that the industry is healing itself.

Healing Trends in GPU Shipments

Analysts note that GPU shipments (both built-in and discrete) have experienced increased sales for the second time in the last quarter, when compared with the previous term as well as their year-ago figures. In particular, the growth is 16.8% relative to quarter Q2/2022 while 36.6% higher relative to quarter quarter Q3/2022. All the three major industry players including NVIDIA, AMD and Intel have low-priced ($200—$300) popular portfolios. Some of these examples are the RTX 4060, Radeon RX 7600, and Arc A770.

Insights from Chipmakers

The chipmakers’ statement echoes findings by analysts. However, in its last quarter report, the gaming division (GeForce), albeit comprising minor part of the entire business in NVIDIA and overshadowed by AI positiveness, grew by 15%. A reduction of 8% happened to AMD with Semi-custom GPUs used for gaming consoles from Xbox and PlayStation but Radeons GPUs continued to go up.

However, analysts maintain that these are just the first signals of recovery, with the normalcy – presumably any future one – yet to really set in. There are no current generation cards at this price, and it is much higher for the latest and greater GPUs. For example, the RTX 4090 is incredibly powerful for AI purposes, yet it is very hard to obtain and much more expensive. Besides, last-generation’s GPUs show lower increase of performance than it used to be in the past.

Looking Ahead
Presently, all stares were directed towards the contemporary offsprings. The prevailing sentiment seems to be: indeed, it was a normal situation and we can only cross our fingers that things will work out well in a few months.
